What is a Fresh Start Checking account?

A Fresh Start Checking account, or a second chance checking account, gives people with ChexSystems records or other negative banking history an opportunity to rebuild their finances with access to everyday banking services. It’s ideal for those that have been denied traditional banking services and need to establish good financial standing.

Can I open a Fresh Start Checking account if I have a ChexSystems record?

Yes, Cyprus Credit Union offers those with ChexSystems records an opportunity to rebuild by offering Fresh Start Checking. However, certain restrictions apply, so make sure to review these requirements before opening an account. 

Can I open a Fresh Start Checking account online?

Yes. You can apply for a Basic or Dream Rewards Checking account, and after review of your record, we will contact you regarding opening a Fresh Start Checking account if you don't qualify for a Basic or Dream Rewards Checking.

How do I qualify to upgrade from Fresh Start to a standard checking account?

To upgrade to a Basic Checking account or Dream Rewards Checking, you need to show responsible account management and good financial practices for 12 consecutive months. 

Does Fresh Start Checking come with a debit card?

Yes, a Fresh Start Checking account comes with debit card privileges to help you manage your daily finances, including access to Home and the Mobile Banking app. 

Is Fresh Start Checking available to new Cyprus Credit Union members?

Yes, new members can open a Fresh Start Checking account, provided they meet our membership requirements.

What's the difference between Fresh Start Checking and Basic Checking? 

Fresh Start Checking is available to members with ChexSystems records or a negative banking history, and requires a minimum balance to open, a monthly fee. Basic Checking is available to all other members and has no minimum balance requirement or monthly fees.
